Being a veteran doesn't disqualify someone from Michigan's Home Help Program — it's a Medicaid benefit open to any Michigan resident who meets the standard eligibility criteria, veteran or not.
Two separate systems
Home Help runs through Medicaid and MDHHS. VA benefits — including VA Aid and Attendance or other VA caregiver support programs — run through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs entirely separately. They're not automatically coordinated, and eligibility for one doesn't guarantee eligibility for the other.
Can someone use both?
This depends on the specific benefits involved and how they interact, which is genuinely outside what a general guide like this can responsibly answer. If your loved one already receives VA benefits, it's worth asking both a VA benefits counselor and MDHHS directly how Home Help might interact with what they're already receiving before assuming either way.
