Two steps take the longest: scheduling and completing the home assessment, and CHAMPS provider enrollment for the chosen caregiver, which typically runs 2–6 weeks on its own once an application is submitted.
What speeds things up
Complete, accurate paperwork the first time. Incomplete CHAMPS applications — a missing field, an unattached document — are the single most common reason enrollment stalls for weeks.
What slows things down
A flagged background check can add real time, since MDHHS reviews it individually rather than auto-rejecting. Missing or incorrect email addresses also cause caregivers to miss important CHAMPS notifications entirely.
